Thanks to personal finance expert and best-selling author Sean Cooper for having me as a guest on his podcast today, “Burn Your Mortgage”. The topic was buying pre-construction new homes.     • This is my response to the Tarion proposal to make new home buyers register their purchase agreements with Tarion, or face reduction in deposit protection. It’s the wrong solution and penalizes homebuyers for builders not obeying the law. It’s regulating consumers, not builders. 
    • Illegal building is a problem in Ontario. It exposes new home buyers to the risk of buying from an unlicensed or un-registered builder. What have regulators done about it? Not much.
    • Here’s an article from The Toronto Star (April 30, 2024) on Tarion’s mediation programme, for which I was interviewed. The CEO of Tarion, who’s a lawyer himself, should have known that mediators with past ties to Tarion may not be perceived by consumers as independent. His promise to review and re-think this sounds like covering his tracks for bad decisions……………………………………………………………………………………..”Should have been disclosed”: Tarion launches internal review over concerns about mediators’ past ties to the agency – thestar.com
